Statement on the passing of James Mentor

11 June 2025

With profound sadness and a heavy heart, I share the tragic news that our dear friend and a member of my team, James Mentor, has passed away. A cherished mate, a loyal companion, a beloved colleague and a steadfast champion of the Labor cause.

James was more than a political ally. He was family to many of us. His commitment to working people and his belief in the power of collective action were the guiding principles of a life spent in service to others.

Those who knew James will remember his warmth, his wisdom and his love for a chat and laugh over a cold beer. He never sought the spotlight, but his impact was undeniable.

Outside of politics, James had a deep passion for sport and history. Whether cheering from the sidelines or analysing the great moments of the past, he believed sport could bring people together and that history held essential lessons for building a better future.

His conversations could effortlessly move from the tactics of a weekend match to reflections on an ALP policy announcement – always thoughtful, always passionate.

It was a passion that mirrored his political life driven by fairness and resilience.

James will be sorely missed, but his spirit will live on in our work, our values and our continued fight for a fairer, more compassionate world.

My deepest condolences to James’ family, loved ones and all who are feeling the weight of this loss.

Vale James. May you rest in eternal peace, my friend – catch up next time over a beer.
